The Early History of Valley Station, Kentucky
Published by The Valley Woman's Club, Valley Station, Kentucky (Date unknown). Written by Mary Jane Yann Stapp.

INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

It is my earnest object that every one who reads this book will develop more pride and appreciatgion for this community's heritage and help in some way to carry on the dreams of these early settlers. They changed a vast wilderness into a cultivated beautiful land. Here were their hopes for their children, just as ours are; and here they worshipped God and sought his guidance, just as we do. Pride and appreciation in ones surroundings, and love for ones home and neighbor, are indeed pleasing qualities. These early settlers had this in their character because they risked their lives every day to save home, family, and neighbor.

To read this history and understand and place the families and their descendants, it would be important to remember two particular dates for the old part of the history; The Revolutionary War, 1775-1783; and The Civil War or War of Rebellion, 1861-1865. Many dates have been used to set the era and for reference by the individual families who might be interested. The dates following the individuals name are his life span, birth, or death date if known. This information has been obtained from family Bibles, grave markers, old deeds, and papers held by descendants, and is correct to the best of my knowledge.

If you read carefully, you can see how most of the families were woven in and out together, and the family names carried on from generation to generation. Now it is easy to understand, how a few years back, every one was cousin Bill or cousin Jane.

There are numerous persons who have been interested and helpful in giving information on the families listed in this history. Particularly, I want to thank the Filson Club for the use of their books and the picture on the page of the center pages. Also, Mr. G. L. Smith for his history books on the Fall Cities, which were most helpful. Mr. Marvin Cunningham and Mrs. Sherley Miller have been helpful and encouraging. Mr. James Goodman, husband of the past president of the Valley Woman's Club, did all the photography work. Mr. Warren Fredericks gave me valuable assistance with his collection of papers. I also want to thank Mr. Don Ensor for the cover design, and of course all the vast numbers of fine persons who helped me over the past year.

EARLY HISTORY

There existed on this continent, a civilization before the Indians or Red Men. They were known as the Mound Builders and these people lived in this area also. Very little is known about them, but they were were apparently defeated and over-run by the Indians. Even General Clark, whose name is well known in Kentucky history, mentioned the Mound Builders. It is said that an old Indian assured him there existed a race of Indians whose complexion was much lighter than that of other Indians. They were called White Indians. Bloody wars were raged between the two and finally the white Indians were completely annihilated. It sees the white Indians of this area made a stand on the land now known as Clarksville. Early in Kentucky history immense quantities of human bones were found under a deposition of earth six to seven feet deep. Apparently the last of these people were destroyed on Sandy Island.

Now we come to the Indians or Red Men. This is a race of people with whom we are all somewhat familiar. This Kentucky wilderness was not permanently occupied by any one tribe, but was a hunting ground for many tribes and numerous battles were fought here. The Iroquois, or Six Nations, although not an actual occupation of Kentucky had some claim and made treaties with the English. It appears from the history books that the Red Men often signed their lands away after being well plied with alcohol. The Indians fought land and desperately before they were finally pushed back to make room for the white man. This part of our country's history always had made me feel a bit sad.

Ah! At last we come to the early settlers of this area, in whom we are most interested. They were indeed a brave and hardy lot. I can say with conviction, that I am glad it was not our generation blasting their way through the Kentucky wilderness. There were incessant Indian raids, massacres, diseases, etc. Most of these incidents took place on the other side of Louisville toward the East end; Boone's Station, Floyd's Fork, etc. That was the earliest part of this area to be settled. It seems as though 'a body' wasn't safe even in his garden. The Indians on one occasion cut off a man's retreat from his garden to his door which was only a few short steps, and attempted to kill him. On another occasion, which brings us closer to home, Indians attacked three boys who were hunting and kidnapped them. This took place near Lynn Station or what is known to us as Johnsontown. This was one story with a happy ending. After some time the boys escaped from the Indians, who had taken them to Indiana, and returned to their homes.

Stations began to slowly spring up around this area of Kentucky as well as the Falls of the Ohio. These stations were stockades made of logs with a blockhouse on each corner. The blockhouses had small windows or openings from which the settlers could fire their guns at the Indians. I wonder how these stockades withstood repeated fierce Indian attacks. It seems they were made without nails, which were a scarce commodity on the frontier. This part of our history was taking place just before 1800. General Clark was able earlier to obtain fun powder from Virginia for the settlers who were still fighting the Indians, even on the outskirts of Louisville.

After the Revolutionary War, Kentucky territory, which was really part of Tennessee, was divided into counties and the counties into precincts. Once Louisville was established and began to flourish, settlers poured into this rich territory. In 1790, Louisville had a population of 200 people and all of Jefferson County, which was then of great size, 4,565 people. Most of this accumulation of people had come in about fifteen years. In 1792 Kentucky was admitted into the Federal Union.

There was an abundance of wild game through here. Some of the early roads were made over the paths the great buffalo trampled to the salt licks in Bullitt County, at Shepherdsville and also Mann's Lick near what is now Fairdale.

I stated previously the land east of Louisville was settled first, because it was believed to be far healthier than this portion. A marked changed took place after the county began to improve the drainage, the malaria and offensive vapors disappeared. The former peat bogs and swamps became well cultivated farms that were prosperous. Pond Stream and Mill Creek drained most of the soil. The ponds were drained in Louisville in 1824 and in the county shortly after.

Our history will take us into the Meadow Lawn, Johnstown, and parts of the Shiveley (now Shively), Shardine, Woods, and Cane Run precincts. It you look at the mape on the center pages you can determine how this area looked compared to Valley Station of the present time. On the following pages I will lost some of the earliest families and their histories, and try to tell something about their descendents. On this map you can locate all the home sites. This map was made in 1879. As you can see the county was well inhabited.

There were many ways to obtain land in Kentucky Territory. Virginia Land grants were issued from 1782 to 1792. In 1784 a land office was set up in Louisville. All of the territories between the Cumberland and Green rivers, except the grant to Henderson and Co., but including the site of Louisville and the present Jefferson County, had been appropriated as bounty lands to the soldiers of the Virginia line on the Continental establishment, in the Revolutionary War. In 1783 Colonel Richard Clough Anderson, a Virginia officer, related to General Clark, was appointed principal surveyor of these military districks by the office of the Virginia line.

There were very few out-right grants given in Kentucky. People were granted ground, but it is best to think of this as a patent. Land was given for military service, seminary, academic, treasury warrants and pre-emption grants. Many people who obtained these lands never lived on them and they changed hands frequently, without an actual owner ever residing on the property. There were many disputes over land carried through the courts for years.

The oldest and best surveys were from 1773 to 1774, surveyed for officers of the French and Indian War. These could never be touched. Settlement and pre-emption rights were not to any specific tract, but just to land in Kentucky territory. This ground had to be claimed, surveyed, and the survey kept available for six month in the surveyor's office, before owners could take over. Often even this claim was on another, partly or completely. If owner showed improvement on his land the first year, he could then buy adjoining land if it was unclaimed. Displaced or undesirable persons were also given land in the new territory. This is only toughing light on methods of obtaining land in Kentucky. Old Kentucky grants were issued from 1793 to 1856. Their plan was similar to the earliest Virginia grants.

MEADOW LAWN, JOHNSTOWN, SHIVELEY PRECINCTS

James Harrod, Sr., was born in England and married in 1727. He emigrated to this new country and settled in Pennsylvania. His wife was killed by Indians. There were two children from this marriage, Thomas and John. He later married Sarah Moore, daughter of James Moore, wealthy planter living near Gunpowder River, by the thriving town of Joppa. This family goes back very early in Kentucky history, as early as 1774. James Harrod, one of the children of this marriage, surveyed and laid out the first town in Kentucky at Harrodsburg. Col. William Harrod, a brother of James, helped in the building of the fort at Louisville. The men of this family were predominately trappers, traders, and surveyors. They spoke English, French, and Indian dialect. Colonel James Frances Moore was a first cousin of the Harrods of Kentucky. Some historians have questioned the proof of the connection of Sarah Moore Harrod with the family of Col. James Frances Moore.

Colonel James Frances Moore served in the Revolutionary War as a Captain in the Infantry. He came into Kentucky at an early date and owned large tracts of land. Some of this land he received for his services in the war, while other tracts he received as payment for the surveys he made for other owners. It was stated by a descenant, Dr. Frank Strickler, that Col. Moore owned as much as 40,000 acres of land here in Kentucky and much of this land was around Orell to Shepherdsville. Col. James F. Moore departed this life on the 14th day of December, 1809; from a letter of John Jones, Executor of the Moore estate, now owned by the Miller family.

From the first marriage of Col. James Frances Moore there was one child, Elizabeth (Mrs. Jesse Pendergast). His second wife's name was Elizabeth Higgins. Elizabeth Higgins Moore died May 19, 1834, in Jefferson County. Kentucky was sparsely settled at this time, and there was some question of his actualy marriage the second time. But in one deed on a division of property, he specifically discounted this gossip. From this marriage to Elizabeth there were seven children; Zurulah (Mrs. John Jones), Cassandra (Mrs. Robert Miller), Hiram, Hector, George, Nemrod, and Frances.

Zerulah Moore married Col. John R. Jones. Col. Jones was born in Loudon County, Virginia, November 24, 1778 and he died in Jefferson County. Zerulah was born in 1785 and died October 5, 1843. John Jones was the sone of Captain Edward Jones (Feb. 5, 1745 - __) who served in the Revolutionary War. Capt. Jones founded the Jones Academy, the first academy in Jefferson County, near Buchel.

Zerulah's husband, John, served in the War of 1812. Their son, Edward Jones, was a steamboat man and was also known to be a spy in the Confederate Army. He was captured in New Orleans and sentenced to Skip Island for execution. He escaped to Mexico and later returned to Kentucky. Capt. Edward Jones (1809-1875) married Elizabeth Jane Long (1830-1915) of New Castle, Henry County, Kentucky. One daugher from this union, Annie Long Jones, married Frank Strickler in Bethany CHurch in 1882. Another son, John married Minnie Stewart, from the Steward family at Valley Road and Old Salt Pike, now Dixie Highway.

Dr. Frank Strickler a sone of Frank and Ann Jones Strickler, still owns part of the original farm. This property stands on the North side of Valley Road across from Valley Elementary School.

PAGE 6: Robert Miller Home -- Cottonwood Home

Robert Miller was believed to have come to Kentucky in 1796, as found in a biographical sketch of Shackelford Miller, a descendant. Robert Miller, a twin brother to Buckner who died in infancy, was born in King Queen County, Virginia, April 6, 1774 and died July 2, 1863. A story has been carried down through the family that his sister was married to the first governor of the state of Virginia. Robert and Cassandra (May 18, 1783 - Aug. 3, 1846) were married Nov. 1, 1804. She was the daughter of Col. James Frances Moore. On October 31, 1804, a month before her marriage, James F. Moore conveyed to Cassandra Moore 250 acres of land purchased by him from a 1500 acre tract of John Kemp, part of this land bordered Pond Creek. Col. James Frances Moore had also give his other daughter, Zerulah, a tract of land before her marriage to John Jones. The property of the two sisters joined one another.

A story related to me by a descendant, Miss Anna Miller, about one of the women in the Miller family, believed to be Cassandra. Cassandra traveled from Virginia on horseback, accompanied by a colored family retainer. She carried a china bowl, and she had a cottonwood branch with which se switched the horse. When she arrived here she planted the branch and it grew to be an immense cottonwood tree. The farm was then known as the Cottonwood Home. A cyclone uprooted the tree about 60 years ago. The bowl Cassandra carried to her new home with her, still remains at the home place.

Slaves helped operate this farm, and after the parents died the land was divided between the children. The original farm home burned around 1820, except for a back portion. The house was immediately rebuild, within the walls of the former structure, and still remains on the property, occupied by descendants of the original owners. The house is soundly constructed with thick brick walls. The brick was burned and made right on the farm while the family and slaves were rebuilding. In later years a star support was added to the brick wall.

On the first page of the large family Bible, where part of this information was obtained, the following was inscribed: "Robert Miller Book, Purchased of the Rev. Peter Duncan Feb. 28, 1846 Price $2.46." Any one could imagine how expensive a large Bible would be today.

Robert Miller gave 1/2 acre of land to Methodist Episcopal Church according to survey dated June 28, 1843.

Children from the marriage of Robert and Cassandra were: Buckner (Aug. 1805- ); James Frances (May 16, 1807- ); Dorothy Matthews Miller (Feb. 13. 1809- ); Elizabeth Miller (Nov. 1, 1810-Sept. 30, 1836) and she married Darrell E. Jones; Edna (Oct. 15, 1812-Sept. 29, 1836) and she married Albert Merriwether; Robert Hatton (March 29, 1814- ); Anthony (Feb. 4, 1816- ); Moriah Moore Miller (Aug. 2, 1818-Aug. 1834); Phillip Taylor Miller (Sept. 5, 1820-Sept. 29, 1888) married Diana Frances Samuels; John (Feb 18, 1824-Apr. 18, 1874) Shackelford, a judge, and Neville, former mayor of Louisville, were grandchildren of John Miller.

  2. Martha NEVILLE, b. abt. 1691
  3. Benjamin NEVILLE, b. 1689, d. 1759

Notes:

Nansemond County, VA became Perquimans County, North Carolina, in 1689.

__

On May 16, 1665, John Neville of Nansemond sold to Arthur Skinner 125 acres. This was part of the deed from Roger Neville to Arthur Skinner, his father-in-law.

Deeds of John Neville: In 1689 he and his wife Elizabeth made a deed of "gift" to Benjamin Beale and his wife Martha, most probably their daughter. The deed provided that ifB enjamin and his wife Martha died without issue the land was to go to Benjamin Neville, son of the donor and the deed was witnessed by John Neville Jr. date here 1689. (evidently spelled Neville Neuell and Neuill)

John Neville owned land in Isle of Wight County , also.

John Neville of Nansemond sold land on the Western Branch in Isle of Wight to John Johnson in 1698. The date of his death is not known as the Nansemond records are destroyed . Benjamin Neville, their son, held 475 acres in Nansemond in 1704, as his son Benjamin was holding 475 acres on Nansemond in that year and John Neville does not appear in the Quit Rents.

John Nevil of Namsemond, planter, and Elizabeth his wife sell to John Marshall of Isle of Wight for 100 pounds the 350 acres in Nansemond County , adjoining the Nansemond River , part of 450 acres granted by Gov. Berkeley March 6, 1662 and sold by him to John Neville February 2, 1663 in Nansemond.

On April 28, 1667, John Marshall sold Cornelius Scully for 2000 lbs. tobacco, 400 acres lying on Beaver Dam Swap bought of John Neville.

On February 8, 1671, Arthur Skinner sold the 225 acres bought from John Neville and wife Elizabeth.

On February 21, 1683/4 John Neville with William Godwin, appraised the estate of John Gardner.

On December 9, 1680, John Neville and Richard Reynolds were sureties on the bond of Anne Mecom, relict of Neale Mecom.

On May 20, 1690, John Neville with William Godwin and William West, appraised the estate of Alexander Chestnut.

John Neville of Nansemond sold land on the Western Branch in Isle of Wight to John Johnson in 1698. The date of his death is not known as the Nansemond records are destroyed. Benjamin Neville, their son, held 475 acres in Nansemond in 1704. A Benjamin Neville made his will in North Carolina and many of the name in that state are probably descended from Benjamin and Roger Neville.

Fact-Transferred 150 acres to Benjamin Beale and daughter Martha

-----

3-4-2002 Shirley Landon Wilcox states:

Instead of saying that John Neville married Elizabeth Reynolds ca 1689,
they should say this couple was married PRIOR TO 1689. The reference is
to a 1689 deed that indicates this couple was married PRIOR to that date.
In fact they had been married quite some time as their daughter Martha
was also married PRIOR to 1689.

Benjamin Beale Jr & MARTHA NEVILLE, daughter of JOHN NEVILLE,

There are several deeds in the 1660s that show John & Elizabeth were
already a couple. The earliest deed with them both mentioned is dated
1664. John had land as early as 1663 in Nansemond Co. As a rough estimate
of dates, if John was 21 in 1664 (as we know he was married by then), he
would have been born ca 1643.

I don't know when this John Neville died. At the time of 1704 rent roll
there is just one John Neville in Isle of Wight Co. My guess is that the
older John had died and that the man on the 1704 rent roll is his son
John Neville Jr. It was probably this younger John whose Isle of Wight
will was probated 27 July 1730.

There is a John Nevill in Isle of Wight co., on the 1704-5 Rent Rolls. Subject John reportedly died before 1704, most probably son, John Jr.

  1. John NEVILLE, b. 1640, d. 1698
  2.    Roger NEVILLE, b. abt. 1642, d. 1710

Notes:

General Assembly Enacted That Isle Of Wight County Be Extended To Include Neville
Arrived In America In Nansemon County Or Isle Of Wight County, Virginia

William Neville was the first of his family to arrive in America. He arrived in America in Nansemon County or Isle of Wight County, Virginia. The Nevilles came to America from England, but went to England in 1066 with William the Conquerer from Normany, France.

The Neville family is an old noble family in England. Several Queens of England were from the Neville family. Ann Neville, wife of Richard 3Rd., was one of them. Her father, a powerful nobleman, was the Earle of Warwick and known as the Kingmaker. In England today there are several nobles from the Neville family. The Neville family was from the north of England. Information is from letter by John Davenport Neville ,researcher, 11/16/1974.

According to Trimble in American Origins, William Nevill, who lived in Isle of Wight Co., VA as early as March 1642/3, was probably the first of this family in America. He died before 1665, and his widow probably married Arthur Skinner, since on April 25, 1665, his son Roger Nevill sold his interest in William's land to his "father-in- law, Arthur Skinner. On May 16, 1665, John Neville and his wife Elizabeth of Nansemond Co., VA sold Arthur Skinner 125 acres granted to Nevill. Source: Isle of Wight Co., VA deeds. Interpretation problem: I would assume that by using the words "father-in-law" that Arthur Skinner was not the Step-father (married to widow Nevill) of Roger Nevill, bu that Roger had married a daughter of Arthur Skinner, thus Roger would sell his interest in the land to his "father- in-law"...

On May 16, 1665, John Nevill and his wife Elizabeth of Nansemond Co., VA sold Arthur Skinner 125 acres granted to Nevill. Source: Isle of Wight Co., VA deeds. This would indicated that John and Roger were brothers (sons of William Nevill) and both sold their interest in the subject land within 21 days to Arthur Skinner.

From "Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight County, Virginia" by John Bennett Boddie, pages 235 and 236, in part: Neville. ...."William Neville was first of his family in the country . In March 1642-43 the General Assembly enacted that the boundaries of Isle of Wight "shall extend from the main river into the woods southerly into and including the plantations of William Neville and Robert Pitt" In 1643 Captain John Upton patented land next to him. (Land located on the borders of Isle of Wight Co., VA and Nansemond Co., VA)

Shirley Wilcox warns that Bodie did not show this source and his works must be used with caution as he linked people just because the name was the same.

William Neville was dead before the 25th April 1665 for on that date Roger Neville sold to Arthur Skinner, his fathe r-in-law, "all claims to the estate of William Neville my father".

John Bennett Boddie's Historical Southern Families, Vol. II , p. 149 and 150: "William Neville, first of his family in VA...on borders of Isle of Wight and Nansemond. In March 1642-43 the General Assembly enact ed that the boundaries of Isle of Wight shall extend from the main rive r into the woods southerly into and including the plantations of William Nev ille and Robert Pitt...William Neville had two sons, Roger and JOHN Nevill e [actually, Boddie shows proof only for Roger]...Roger seemingly move d to Nansemond...disappears from Isle of Wight records from 1672 until 1704 when he was holding 200 acres of land in the Quit Rents of tha t year...JOHN Neville [Roger's apparent brother] m. Elizabeth Reynolds... In 1665, JOHN Neville of Nansemond, planter, and Elizabeth, his wife, sol d to John Marshall of Isle of Wight for 1000 lbs. of tbco. 400 acre s granted Mar. 6
to Henry Bradley and Bradley sold to Neville Feb. 2, 1663. Re corded in Nansemond, John Lear, Clerk. Recorded in Isle of Wight, John Jennings,

More About IMMIGRANT WILLIAM NEVILLE:
Note: Bet. 1642 - 1643
Residence: April 26, 1665

From Shirley Wilcox 3-5-2002
I do not believe that the William Nevill of Nansemond & Isle of Wight
Co., VA is a son of John Nevill of Charles Co., MD.

I have done original research in MD but not in this area of VA. Instead I
have relied on published material, so there may be important records of
which I am not aware. The William Nevill of Isle of Wight Co., VA is
assumed dead by 25 April 1665 because on that date Roger Nevill sold to
his "father-in-law" Arthur Skinner all claims to the estate of his
father William Nevill. (John Bennett Boddie, Seventeenth Century Isle of
Wight County Virginia (Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 1993 reprint,
p541) Arthur Skinner had married William Nevill's widow. In Colonial
times, some relationship terms had broader meanings than we currently
use. "Father-in law" in this case means step-father. i.e. a father by
marriage or by law.

In contrast to the above William Nevill who died PRIOR to 1665, the
William Nevill of Maryland, son of John Nevill (will probated 1664) was
still living in 1665. On 10 9ber 1667, William Nevill, son of John Nevill
dec'd sold inherited land in Charles Co., MD to William Allen & John
Munn. The chain of title calling him the son of John Nevill deceased, can
be found in various deeds (Liber D:88 & D:99), some of which have been
published. (See Elise Jourdan Greenup, Abstracts of Charles County
Circuit Court, Court & Land Records, Volume 2, 1665-1695, p1 & 13).

I am not aware of any definitive records that prove what happened to this
William Nevill, son of the immigrant John. He is probably the man married
by 17 Aug 1666 to Joane/Jane Browiske (Charles Co., MD Deeds C #1:61-64 &
150-159). He may also be the man who said he married Sarah Noble 18 Oct.,
1694 at Salem (?MD?*).

On 26 March 1694 William and Jane Nevill of Talbot Co., MD sold a lot in
Westchester. (Talbot Co., MD Land Records L.L. #7, p99-100). I do not
know of another William with a wife Jane during this time period so I
suspect this is the couple found in earlier Charles County records.

A few months later on 15 June 1694 William Nevill deeds to Sarah Noble a
dwelling house & lot in the town of Westchester. (Leonard, Talbot Co., MD
Land Records, Book 3, p20).

The court records of 14 Sept. 1697 say the sheriff is to command William
Nevill late of Charles County, plantor, to answer charges that he "doth
keep & Entertaine another mans wife by forse against ye pease of our
Sovereigne Lord..." William comes & says that she is his lawful wife &
produces in court a certificate "from Salem October ye 28th day 1694.
This may satisfye whom it may conserne that William Neville & Sarah Noble
is lawfully marryed by mee according to ye Laws of our countrey - given
under my had ye day & yeare above written. Tho: Hardshorne. It is
witnessed by Wm Fraford, Richard Whitman & Mary Whitman"

It goes on to say that as it has been alleged in court that he hath
another wife. To clear himself in that case, William Nevill produced this
discharge: "Know all men by these presents that I Jane Browiske doe
hereby Exonerate discharge acquitt for Ever William Nevill from all claim
of Dowers, Titles of Dowers or any other matter or thing whatsoever
having Received full satisfaction from ye sd Nevill as by his Deed of
gift appears as witness my hand this 26 [or 20 or 28?]th day of March
one thousand six hundred ninety five. And that ye sd Jane does hereby
acquit & discharge ye sd Wm Nevill from any pretense of marryage, and
will never trouble nor any wayes molest ye sd Nevill during his naturall
life." It is signed by the mark of Jane Browiske & witnesses were Jno:
Salter & Elias Robinson. (Charles Co. Land & Court Records Vol. 18, V #1,
1696-1698, p243-4).

William Nevill was accused in 1698 of having two wives, but no witnesses
appeared in court & he was cleared by proclamation & discharged
(Provincial Court Judgements, Vol. 7, I.L., 1698, p202).

Note that in 1697 he is called LATE of Charles Co., MD. I suspect he is
the man who shows up in Talbot Co., MD records in 1694.

*Back to the marriage in Salem. The original record gives no state & many
have assumed it was Massachusetts, forgetting that there was a much
closer Salem in Dorchester Co., MD. Dorchester County is right across the
bay from Calvert County where the immigrant John Nevill had been at one
time. Talbot County is the county to the north of Dorchester County.

I have no record of a William Nevill with wife Martha.

William Neville reportedly was born in England about 1605 and lived at "Nevill's Oyster Bank", in Isle of Wight Co., VA on the Nansemond Co., line in March 1642/3 (Trimble)
