Watterson Trail (old Jeffersontown Road)

"This cemetery is located on the old Jeffersontown Road, about 2 miles east of Middletown. Chenoweth Run begins here on spot 150 yards east of old home (still standing) with approx. 8 graves, the condition very poor. This old log home is the Dr. Robert Miller place. I have yet to find his grave. He was a doctor in Floydsburg, Kentucky in 1830, and was chairman of Floydsburg's first board of trustees. They met in Miller's home in Floydsburg, on 30 Jan 1830 and chartered the town. The Millers are not here but the Woodsmalls are. The Woodsmalls are an Oldham County family. My father once owned the Woodsmall place, one mile south of LaGrange." - Robert Foster Johnson. Additional names were added to this cemetery listing on 08/16/06 from a listing found in "Middletown's Days and Deeds; The Story of 150 Years of Living in an Old Kentucky Town" book. Hence, the listing of the Miller burials, even though the stones are obviously now gone.

She was the daughter of Col James Frances Moore. On October 31, 1804, a month before her marriage James F. Moore conveyed to Cassandra Moore 250 acres of land purchased by him from a 1500 acre tract of John Kemp, part of this land bordered Pond Creek. Col. James Frances Moore had also given his other daughter, Zerulah, a tract of land before her marriage to John Jones. The property of the two sisters joined one another.

Heafer note: A story was related to me by a descendant, Miss Anna Miller, about one of the women in the Miller family, believed to be Cassandra. Cassandra traveled from Virginia on horseback, accompanied by a colored family retainer. She carried a china bowl, and she had a cottonwood branch with which she switched the horse. When she arrived here she planted the branch and it grew to be an immense cottonwood tree. This farm was then known as Cottonwood Home. A cyclone uprooted the tree about 60 years ago. The bowl Cassandra carried to her new home with her, still remains at the home place.

Notes:

Served in Revoltion until July 27, 1779 as a captain of the Eighth Pennsylvania Regement and was discharged with honor. In 1780 he was on the staff of Gen. George Rogers Clark, stationed at the Falls of the Ohio, now the city of Louisville. He filled many positions and offices in Jefferson County with honor and credit to himself. As soon as Kentucky became independent of Virginia he was elected to the Legislature and in 1803 to the Senate, where he served continuously until 1810. He died upon the floor of the Senate. In 1809 he was Humphry Marshall's second when he fought his celebrated duel with Henry Clay. He was one of the five commissioners named by the Virginia Assembly in "Clark's Grant" and served on that commission until his death. When he died he had 55,000 acres of land in the State of Kentucky and he controlled the great salt wells of that state. He built the first large house ever constructed in Kentucky. It was a palace in those days. It contained sixteen rooms and the interior finish was as fine as anything that could be found in this day. It was, unfortunately, torn down a few years ago. A Kentucky writer says that if it were yet standing it would be historically one of the most interesting things of which Kentucky could boast. Amond the prominent descendants of James Francis Moore living in the present time is Judge Shackelford Miller, the chief judge of the Kentucky Court of Appeals. He is a distinguished lawyer and a charming gentleman.

In a letter written by Col. Nicholas Ruxton Moore, dated at Baltimore, February 20, 1787, and address to his brother, Col. James Francis Moore, Bear Grass, Ky., he mentions a niece, Betsy, who was making her home with him at that time. She was then 14 years old. He mother died at Sullivan Fort, which was located on Bear Grass Creek, Jefferson County, Kentucky, when Betsy was only 3 years old. After her mother's death she was sent back to Baltimore, where she remained until she was 14, when she, with her uncle, Nicholas Ruxton Moore, rode on horseback from Baltimore to Louisville, Ky., which was a very perilous as well as a very brave thing to do, as the whole country at that time was infested with hostile Indians. When she was 16 years old she ran away and married Jesse Eliot Pendergast, a cousin of Commodore Jesse Duncan Eliot and the father of Commodore Jesse Duncan Eliot and the father of Commodore Garret Jesse Pendergast, who died while in command of the Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1862, a distinguished naval officer and as fine a gentleman as ever served in the United State Navy.

A descendant of Col. James Francis Moore, recently writing from Kentucky, states that the name of James Francis Moore still lives but that few of his descendants have held on to their wealth. The children were reared in luxury and never knew the value of money.

From "The Early History of Valley Station, Kentucky"
Published by The Valley Woman's Club, Valley Station, Kentucky (Date unknown). Written by Mary Jane Yann Stapp.

Colonel James Frances Moore served in the Revolutionary War as a Captain in the Infantry. He came into Kentucky at an early date and owned large tracts of land. Some of this land he received for his services in the war, while other tracts he received as payment for the surveys he made for other owners. It was stated by a descenant, Dr. Frank Strickler, that Col. Moore owned as much as 40,000 acres of land here in Kentucky and much of this land was around Orell to Shepherdsville. Col. James F. Moore departed this life on the 14th day of December, 1809; from a letter of John Jones, Executor of the Moore estate, now owned by the Miller family.

From the first marriage of Col. James Frances Moore there was one child, Elizabeth (Mrs. Jesse Pendergast). His second wife's name was Elizabeth Higgins. Elizabeth Higgins Moore died May 19, 1834, in Jefferson County. Kentucky was sparsely settled at this time, and there was some question of his actualy marriage the second time. But in one deed on a division of property, he specifically discounted this gossip. From this marriage to Elizabeth there were seven children; Zurulah (Mrs. John Jones), Cassandra (Mrs. Robert Miller), Hiram, Hector, George, Nemrod, and Frances.

Zerulah Moore married Col. John R. Jones. Col. Jones was born in Loudon County, Virginia, November 24, 1778 and he died in Jefferson County. Zerulah was born in 1785 and died October 5, 1843. John Jones was the sone of Captain Edward Jones (Feb. 5, 1745 - __) who served in the Revolutionary War. Capt. Jones founded the Jones Academy, the first academy in Jefferson County, near Buchel.

Zerulah's husband, John, served in the War of 1812. Their son, Edward Jones, was a steamboat man and was also known to be a spy in the Confederate Army. He was captured in New Orleans and sentenced to Skip Island for execution. He escaped to Mexico and later returned to Kentucky. Capt. Edward Jones (1809-1875) married Elizabeth Jane Long (1830-1915) of New Castle, Henry County, Kentucky. One daugher from this union, Annie Long Jones, married Frank Strickler in Bethany CHurch in 1882. Another son, John married Minnie Stewart, from the Steward family at Valley Road and Old Salt Pike, now Dixie Highway.

Dr. Frank Strickler a sone of Frank and Ann Jones Strickler, still owns part of the original farm. This property stands on the North side of Valley Road across from Valley Elementary School.

Mann's Lick
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mann's Lick was a salt lick just north of present-day Fairdale neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. It
was named for John Mann, who belong to a surveying party of Captain Thomas Bullitt in 1773.[1]
The land was given to Colonel John Todd in 1780. When Todd died at the Battle of Blue Licks in 1782,
the land went to his daughter Mary O. Todd. Joseph Brooks leased the land from Mary Todd in 1787,
starting the saltworks immediately.[2]
Brooks had originally been from Pennsylvania. He and his wife Nancy had left their home in 1779,
traveling down the Ohio River to Maysville, Kentucky, and then walking the rest of the way to the
Louisville area. He started working at Thomas Bullitt's Bullitt's Lick salt works, near Shepherdsville,
Kentucky in 1784. After acquiring the Mann's Lick salt lick, he decided to build a salt furnace. He
started by constructing a hollow-log pipe to pump water to his salt furnace; remains of these hollow logs
were still available to be seen in the 1940s.[3] Due to fear of Indian attack, fortifications were built to
protect the site in 1788.[4]
Due to salt being a necessary item in human life, hundreds of workers were used to obtain the salt,
including numerous slaves. Some of these workers began settling on 150 acres (0.61 km2) of James F.
Moore's land, causing the charter in 1794 for the new town of Newtown. It was sold under numerous
brands, most prominently Little Sandy Salt. The salt was considered excellent quality, prized by
merchants, and was sold as far away as Lexington, Kentucky. In 1808 it was sold for $22.25 a bushel,
although it was often traded for such goods as hemp, linen, and tobacco.[5] At its height the salt works
was operated 24 hours a day.[4]
Eventually, the salt lick went out of business, as it was not as big as other nearby salt licks, such as
Bullitt's Lick, and steamboats brought cheaper salt to Louisville. By 1830 the population and salt had
dwindled, and by 1890 a change in Kentucky's constitution caused Newtown to officially dissolve.[6]
The area had attained a negative reputation by Louisvillians between 1830 and 1910. From 1830 to 1860
there were various battles over who owned the land. In 1844 it was given to Margaret W. Preston, as she
was the favorite stepdaughter of her father's (William Preston) wife, Polly Wickliffe. In 1870 an attempt
to find oil on the land was made by the Manslick Petroleum Company. Margaret W. Preston would
continue to own the land through the 1880s as she saw it as "the gift of the best friend I ever had on
earth", referring to her stepmother. In 1886 it had become part of the land for a natural gas company. By
1910 new residents came to the area. As they were unaware of the site's history, they gave it a new
name, Fairdale, instead of its old name of Newtown.[7]
The name lives on, as Manslick Road attained its name from the former salt lick.[6]

My great-grandfather, John Moore, obtained some land in Kentucky, in 1840, from the heirs of Col. James Francis Moore. Col. Moore received such land, in 1783, as part of a land-grant, from Patrick Henry, Governor of Virginia, for the prominent part he took in the Battle of King's Mountain, in 1780.

----------

18 Jul 1767: Nicholas Ruxton Gay, of Baltimore Co., Maryland, to his nephew James Francis Moore, son of his half-brother James Moore Jr., for love and affection, 125 acres. Signed Nicholas Ruxton Gay. Witnesses: Thomas Franklin and Benjamin Rogers. (Baltimore Co. Land Records, Liber B, No. P.)

1773: After marrying, James and Ann moved from Baltimore Co. to Turkeyfoot Twp. in Bedford Co., PA. His aunt and uncle, Col. James and Sarah Moore Harrod, had moved to the Big Cove in Bedford County around 1767.

1774: "Taxable" in Turkeyfoot Twp., Bedford Co., PA. (http://www.pa-roots.com/~bedford/taxlists/tl1774turkeyfoot.html)

1775: James Moor (sic) taxable n Turkeyfoot Twp., Bedford Co., PA. (http://www.pa-roots.com/~bedford/taxlists/tl1775turkeyfoot.html)

He was commissioned a Lieutenant in the 12th Pennsylvania Regiment (aka Miles Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment), March 19, 1776. Became a Captain on October 25, 1776; regiment designated 13th Pennsylvania Regiment on November 12, 1777; transferred to the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment, July 1, 1778; resigned August 2, 1779 ("Historical Register of Officers of the Continental Army During the War of the Revolution," Francis B. Heitman, Rev. ed. Washington, D.C.: The Rare Book Shop Pub. Co., 1914, p. 399).

The 12th Pennsylvania was commanded by Col. Samuel Miles; Lt. Col. James Piper of Bedford County was second-in-command. Moore served as lieutenant to Capt. Richard Brown. The regiment, serving in the division of Gen. Sterling, participated in the disastrous Battle of Long Island on 27 Aug 1776 and sustained a heavy loss. Captain Brown was among the captured, and the regiment suffered such heavy losses that it was necessary to consolidate the companies. Moore was promoted to captain in place of Richard Brown, and this company was transferred to the Pennsylvania foot regiment--but on its roll appear only 19 of the original names of the company (from "History of Bedford and Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania, Vol. II," chapter 19, pub. 1906).

Note: In "Virginia's Western War 1775-1786" (p. 58), James Francis Moore is named as the partner to Benjamin Linn who, posing as trappers, left Harrodsburg in April of 1777 to scout the Illinois country in advance of Clark's campaign against Kaskaskia. Since James was still serving in the 12th Pennsylvania Regiment at the time, it's likely that the author confused James Francis with Samuel Moore, no relation as far as I know.

1779: Assessed for taxes in Turkeyfoot Twp. of Bedford Co., PA: 150 acres (800), 2 horses (160), 5 cows (175), 1 Negro (500). (http://www.pa-roots.com/~bedford/taxlists/tl1779turkeyfoot.html)

April 1780: He was Deputy Commissary General for General George Rogers Clark at the Falls of the Ohio ("Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines, 1775-1783," ed. by John H. Gwathmey, Richmond, VA, 1938, p. 561).

Fall 1786: Daughter Elizabeth (Betsey) is taken to live with her uncle, Nicholas Ruxton Moore, in Baltimore County. She later returned to Kentucky and married Jesse Prendergast.

1789: Named as a trustee for the new towns of Harrodsburg and Louisville.

30 Apr 1789: Recorded in Jefferson County, KY, in reconstructed federal census.

8 Aug 1790: Recorded in Jefferson County, KY, in reconstructed federal census.

13 Dec 1794: General Assembly of Kentucky establishes New Town on his lands in Jefferson County near Mann's Lick. Adjoins lands of James Speed and Joseph Brooks. Trustees: Abner Field, Basil Prather, Isaac (?) Hornbeck, Lewis Field, and James Standiford.

1809: James dies while visiting the state legislature at Frankfort.

Living at Mount Holly near Mann's Lick, KY, at time of the writing of his will (18 Jul 1807). In will, states that he and wife Elizabeth are lawfully married, and that his children are his legal heirs, since he can no longer produce evidences of his marriage to Elizabeth. In the will:
-- He leaves plantation at Fish Pools to daughter, Elizabeth, for the use during her life, and to any child of her body after her death, but her husband, Jesse Pendergrass, to have no part of his estate;
-- States that daughters Cassandra Miller and Zeruiah Jones, and son, Hector Moore, are already well advanced in the world by him and they are not to claim any further part of the estate.
-- All the residue of the estate, real and personal (except for real property near Mann's Lick and two calves mentioned below) to be divided between the rest of his children.

Papers of James Francis and his son-in-law, John Jones, are archived at the Filson Club in Louisville. Included are land records, 1782-1839, particularly concerning his holdings at the salt works at Mann's Lick, and his appointment as a colonel in the Jefferson County militia in 1789.

Buckner MILLER

Marriage 1 : Comfort D. WORTHINGTON m. 13 April 1830, b. 28 August 1812, d. 28 August 1890

  2.    Margaret Stade MILLER
  3.    Charlie MILLER
  4.    Henry MILLER
  5.    Anna MILLER
  6.    Julia Worthington MILLER
  7.    Dorthea MILLER

Notes:

Buckner Miller, born Aug, 1805. From Mercer County, Kentucky Marriage Records, 1800-1830, Vol II & III is lists Buckner Miller married Comfort D. Worthington on April 13, 1830. From a family history, it states he was married three times,

Buckner Miller is listed in the 1850 Louisville Ward 7, Jefferson Co., Census as follows: He was born in KY, is 45 yrs old, he owns 2,500 acres and is a bricklayer. His wife's name is Comfort, (she was born in 1814) he has children: Margaret, 17, James M., 15, Mary C., 10, Ann E., 8/12 and Theodore, 7. There is a dtr of Buckner's named Dorthea that is mentioned in his brother Anthony's will. In an 1832 Louisville Directory he is listed as a bricklayer living on Walnut between 4th and 5th streets.

He is listed in the 1880 Jefferson Co., KY, Louisville, District 147 as 75 yrs old and with his wife, looks like 'C. D.', age 66, wife, Francis C. M. dtr, age 40 (I can't read what the name says, this page on the census is very poor, Julia Farqua, age 11, dtr, Mary Farqua, 9, dtr. then it looks like the relationship says brother, and it looks like Fruly, age 37 (born 1843), but I don't think he his mother was having children between 1805 and 1843 ! On this census he indicates his mother and father were both born in Virginia. Robert does indicate on the 1850 census that he was born in VA, but I do believe Cassandra Moore, dtr of James Francis Moore and Elizabeth Higgins was born in KY, but I could be wrong. Buckner died between 1880 and 1890 as his wife, Comfort V. Miller is listed as widow Buckner in an 1890 Louisville directory, and she is living b. 2106 W. Madison. But now I see her, Comfort listed in an 1886 Directory living at 903 18th-boarder (I think it means she is a boarder) and is living alone. This would mean Buckner died between 1880 and 1886).

This house was built in 1831 for Elizabeth Miller Jones. It now has nine rooms, some partitions having been added, a two story brick house. The bricks were burned on the farm and the attic is pegged with wood, no nails were used. The front of this house faced the old Church Road and the back of the house was toward Valley Road. The house was set on brick pillars, but in recent years a basement and end porch have been added. At one time Dr. Boggess owned this property. It is presently owned by the Willis Cloud family.

From the History of the Ohio Falls Counties, Vol 2, page 57:

Anthony Miller is the 7th of 10 children of Robert Miller who came to Jefferson county in about the year 1800.
