Notes:

If the story of any persons life, truly told, must be interesting, then those of my family, who have requested an account of mine, may not be unduly disappointed. I console myself with the assurance that such a story will interest at least my four children and their offspring, that knowledge encourages me to proceed.

Home Life.

To begin, then, I was born in Norkoping, Sweden, on the thrid day of December 1860, of poor parents. My father, Nicholas Nelson, was born June 1837, also near Norkoping, where his parents owned a small farm. The house had only two rooms, hitchen and bedroom. My parents had a lovely flower garden, also many berry bushes and fruit trees. My sisters and I delighted in paying them visits, and also to get our fill of berries and fruits. Grandmother Nelson was very kind, but grandfather was a regular old grump. Both lived to quite an old age. When last I saw them, both were stooped and walked with the aid of canes.

My father had two brothers, Gustaf and John, also one sister Helen. One brother was an engineer in the Stockholm Water Works, the other a factory worker. We saw very little of our father, who was a fireman on a large steamer, plying between Stockholm and Norkoping, an all night trip. In 1868 he left Sweden for America. My mother's sister, Mathilda, accompanied him, her intended husband being in Chicago, Ill. and whom she married upon reaching Chicago.

Father did not write home very often, seems he soon forgot he had a family in Sweden.

My mother, Anna Sofia Erickson Nelson, was one of five children, born near Norkoping, her father whom I never saw was killed in a mine. Her mother was a very neat grand old lady, and beloved by all who knew her, she lived with our family til her death at 75 years of age. She was a very religious woman, and saw to it that we had our daily bible readings.

The Erickson children never attended school, the boys Gusty and Carl worked in stores as helpers, were very thrifty saved their money and when they were older started their own business.

Uncle Gustaf was very fortunate from the beginning and soon had set aside enough money to purchase a home in Stockholm. He married a school teacher, Emma Ulrecka Cederholm, who was my teacher, who kept a private school. She was an impatient and cross teacher, I can remember verywell of her locking me in a room, then going home and leaving me, all because I was unable to remember one bible verse. Uncle Gustaf and Emma had four boys, two died in infancy, the other two were named John and Carl.

Mother's sister Caroline, died when she was very young.

Aunt Mathilda, before mentioned, who came to Chicago with my father, lived to be about 65 years of age. Her husband died one month after she passed away. They had no children.

Uncle Carl married a milliner, Charlotte Malmstrom. A very fine lady. They had a large family, twelve children I believe, four died young, eight were still living when I visited in Sweden in the year 1910.

After a difficult start Uncle Carl's business went along very well. He became owner of a large apartment house. Both my uncles were rated as millionaires at the time of their death.

Home Life with Mother

After my father's departure for America, my mother started a business in the "Open Market Place" where she sold home-made sausage and pork. Mother hired help to grind the meat, horsemeat and salt pork, from which we made the sausage at home. After grandmother's death, mother hired a country girl, Maria, to look after my sisters and me, as she had to leave home at five every morning, for the market. She had a long day, it was well after dark before she returned. Mother was big and strong, and worked very hard. When I was about 12 years old, her health began to fail, stomach trouble they called it then, probably cancer, there were no operations in those days.

Uncle Gustaf took sister Wilhelmia, "Mimmi" we called her, and Uncle Carl took sister Anna, to Stockholm to live with their families, and I remained with mother. Uncle Carl later sent mother and me to a health resort, where mother took special baths, but without results. I later wrote father in America for help, but none came. So finally as mother's condition grew worse we had to give up our little home, and rented a room. At this time I was about 15 years old, I felt I was old enough to work out, and help mother more, so I inserted an add in the newspaper for a position as a helper in a store, Mother knew nothing of this. The following Saturday about 7 a.m. a Mrs. Hollertz came to our address and inquired for me, mother told her I was in bed asleep. Upon asking my age Mrs. Hollertz said I was too young for the work, and left. I felt very bad when mother informed me. The following Saturday, Mrs. Hollertz returned and met me, after which she said I would do and to be prepared to leave with her in an hour. So, I too left mother. We departed, my employer and I, in a large open sled, as it was in the month of December, the sled was drawn by two large horses, and loaded with barrels and boxes of groceries. The ride was very cold, we arried at our destination about midnight. All was strange to me. he Hollertz were about fifty years of age, had no children, owned a large farm with three houses, one for the store, one the homes and the other a dance hall. I had a very good home with thene people, and much fun at the dances, which I always attended.

One day I overheard someone ask the Hollertzs' if I was their daughter, and they answered no, but I might be - well this frightened me and I thought I might never again see my mother, so I decided as soon as I was given the opportunity I would run away, which I did after being with them for more than a year. It was after Christmas when they were to send a load of hay to Norkoping, so I asked if I could go along, they said I could, and we drove all night. Two large oxen just trodding along in the cold, arriving at the city toll gate about 4 a.m. As the toll gates are not open at that hour, I left the cart and started to walk alone in the snow, high as my hips. As I could see the lights of Norkoping, I knew just where I was and how to reach mothers home. She was still in bed and was so happy to see me. I had been home with mother only one week when the Hollertz came to take me back, but I would not return with them. They came twice in a short time to try to have me return with them, but I refused.

After a time I wrote to Uncle Gustaf in Stockholm, asking if I could come to them, so he sent me railroad fare, and to my regret, I went from "the frying pan into the fire". My aunt was very hard on me, forced upon me all the housework, with meagre food and of course no "pay" and made over clothes. My sister Anna had gone to live with them some years earlier, but she was going to school and also given piano lessons, so all in all she had it quite easy. Sister Anna and I remained with Uncle Gustaf's family six years. My mother died in a hospital in Norkoping, I had not seen her for three years before her death. I wrote to my father to send for us, which he did sending us two tickets to America.

Sister "Mimmi" died in Stockhold in 1913, she was survived by one son [half of last line on page unreadable].

Fritz had two sons by his first wife Nettie, who passed away, and two sons by his second wife.

Headed for America.

We left Sweden May 10, 1883, reaching Toronto, Canada June 4, 1883. It took thirteen days to cross the Atlantic.

We arrived in Chicago and found that our father had remarried, and we had a step-mother, Augusta, their home was not very nice, our step-mother being a very poor housekeeper, so we did not stay with them very long.

I secured work as a housemaid, my first place was with a family with five children. I did all the housework and laundry for $2.50 per week. Anna secured work with another family as housemaid or nursemaid, at $2.00 per week.

Shortly after reaching Chicago, I met your father, Lorenz Otto Hultgren, born in Wisby, on the Island of Gothland, Sweden. [According to Ed Hultgren on 15 July 1999, "Lars" was actually born in Nodjehult, and the family moved to Visby when he was about 6 years old.]

We were married in Chicago Jan. 29, 1883. He was 39 years old, I was 32. Your father was a high class cabinet-maker, learned his trade in Europe. He worked in Chicago for such firms as John A. Colby & Sons, Kimball Piano Co. A.H.Andrews Co. and Brunswick-Balke-Collander Co. all old firms, and still in business in Chicago. Your father's mother died when he was eleven years old. Soon after his father re-married, but he had a most unhappy home life then, and he ran away from home, never to return. He secured work with a wealthy family, taking care of their horses, and stayed with them til he was fifteen years old. Then he went to Stockholm where he learned the cabinet maker trade. He worked there until he was seventeen, then traveled to Germany, Russia and later to America. Your father's only living relative is a neice, Elfreda Lundgren of Stockholm, she is about 78 years of age.

The Chicago Hultgrens

Four children were born to us, all on the West Side of Chicago. Signe, Geroge, Arthur and Alma. Your father was a very intelligent man, but handicapped because of meagre schooling, and not having mastered the English language very well, never was able to secure a position of very good salary, never-the-less, we always had a good home and plenty to eat and wear.

During the World's Fair 1892-1893 we lived at 15th St & Center Ave. 3rd floor apt. all modern, with gas, here we lived with Sister Anna, whose husband Herman Wahlstrom died of yellow fever, in New Orleans, came to live with us, with her two children, Helmer and Ruth. Your Aunt Anna and cousin Ruth lived with us for 6 years, Helmer went to live with a family friend, Mr. & Mrs Nelson, very fine people.

To help your anut, we moved with her when she purchased a confectionary story, on West 32nd Street, later she sold the store and went to work for Marshall Field & Co. in the Tea Room. Still later she married Herman Falberg, a widower with two children, Blanche and Weaver. Out of this marriage two additional children were born, Elsie and Herman. This with your aunt's two Wahlstrom children, sometimes brought out the old saying "Your children and my children are quarreling with OUR children." But on the whole they really did get along very nicely.

Sister Anna died in Roseland, Ill. in 1931, her husband Herman died a few years later. His son Weaver, died of burns brought on by an explosion of a gas stove while camping out one summer with his family.

My daughter Signe, married Edward Stanton Goulding. Her husband is partner in the firm of Roberts & Goulding, Optometrists, and doing very well. Their son Edward married Ions Leavena, Feb. 8th, 1936. Edward is employed in his father's farm, they have no children.

Their daughter Helen married Wm. Luske June 39, 1934, they have two daughters, Lyn and Lou and reside in Madison, Wis.

My son George, married Agnes B. Sliney, Dec. 14, 1907. George started work at age of 13 with Christ Miller in a hardware store, later with Mr. Winkrantz, wagon and carriage painter, and still later with the Western Union Tel. Co. and on Jan 1st, 1900 with the Pennsylvania R.R. with which road he is still connected, haveing been advanced thru various positions, until he became District Freight Agent at Chicago, later Industrial Agent for all the territory west of Crestline, Ohio. to St. Louis, Mo. He was appointed Division Freight Agent at South Bend, Ind. On May 1st, 1942 when account of a heart ailment the Vice President of the road appointed him as Special Representative of the road, thus relieving him of all responsibility. This position he still holds.

Their son George, now about 32 years old, graduated from Fenwick High School, Oak Park, Ill. attended De Paul University, Chicago. Employed as Traffic Manager and Asst. Purchasing Agent for O'Brien Varnish Company, South Bend, Ind. Drafted Oct. 17, 1941 for World War 2 Service. Was stationed at Indianapolis, Ind. Macon. Ga. Drew Field, Fla. Pearl Harbor. Hawaii. He was a Tech. Sgt/ and saw action on Saipan, from May 1944 to the end of the war. He returned to the States Nov. 1945. While in training, he was called home from Drew Field, due to his father's illness, and while on a 20 day furlough he married Kay McKeough. Their daughter Kathy was born at Tampa, Fla. When George left for the South Pacific, Kay and Kathy returned to South Bend, Ind. Where they as a family are once again living.

George Sr.'s son Edward, age 24 graduated from Notre Dame University, he married Francis Boltz of Ft. Wayne, Ind. they have a baby son, Edward Jr. Edward, Sr. is employed as an accountant in Ft. Wayne, Ind.

George's daughter Bernadette, is 18 years old, and a student at Indiana University, at Bloomington, Ind.

My son Arthur, like his brother George, did not have high school or college education, but both have been very successful in business world. Arthur started as a newsby, later with the C.B. & Q R.R. then the C. T.H. & S.E. R.R. then became Genl Freight Agent for the latter line, and when that line was taken over by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul R.R. he became Asst. Traffic Manager for the Shell Pet. Corp, at St. Louis, Mo. later promoted to Traffic Manager, which position he still holds, being now located in New York, Owns his own home at Westfield, N.J.

Their daughter Adele, married Charles Maguire, they have a son, Timothy, they too make their home in Westfield, N.J.

Arthur's son, Robert, is a graduate of a Dramatic Academy, and was about to launch his career, when he too was called into service, for World War 2. He was commissioned a Leit. in the Anti Aircraft branch. At this writing he is still stationed in Japan, having been in their service since Sept. 1943.

My daughter Alma, "Toots" married Arthur D. Welk, a veteran of World War 1. They were married Jan. 10, 1920 at the home of her sister Signe at Berwyn, Ill. Arthur is employed as a live stock buyer by Swift & Co. At the time of their marriage he was transferred to Ft. Worth, Tex. where they lived a year. Then returned to Chicago, Ill. In July 1933 they had twin sons, Richard and Roger. Then a third son was born Feb 17, 1925, Ronand.

Their son, Roger, also served in World War 2, he was commissioned a Second Lt. in the Eighth Army Air Corps, as a Bombardier, Dec. 1944. He enlisted in the Air Corps Nov. 1943, and was called into service Feb. 1944. Left for overseas May 1944. and completed his thrity-five missions over France and Germany, Oct. 17th, 1944. Before finishing his missions he was made a 1st Lt. He received the Air Medal and Four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and a Presidential Unit Citation. While in service he married Jean Yvonna Kropp, of Winona, Minn. at Dyersburg, Tenn. where he was stationed at the time. He is now out of service having been discharged Oct. 1945. He attended Winona State Teachers College and St. Mary College of Winona, completing two years of college work before being called to the colors. He is now finishing his education at Wisconsin University, majoring in Animal Husbandry. He and his little family are at present living on the University Campus, Randall Trailer Park.

Richard, likewise enlisted in the Air Corps in Nov. 1943. He was called June 1944. Took his radio-gunner training at Scott Field, Ill and Ardmore, Okla. He was radio man on B-39s. He never left this country. He was discharged from service Feb 26, 1946. He too attended Winona State Teachers College and St. Marys of Winona, and is now registered at University of Minnesota, where he will complete his four years of schooling, majoring in Animal husbandry also.

Their youngest son, Ronald, was drafted into service Aug. 1943, at age of 18. However, he was Honorably Discharged, account of a leg growth, three months after induction. He is now attending University of Minnesota where he is majoring in Architecture.

The Welk family resides in Winona, Minn. where Arthur was transferred in Sept. 1928 from Chicago, Ill.

So ends the Hultgren History.

May God be with you all, and keep you happy and in good health always.
