Condolences Book On April 6, 1999 firefighters Kenneth Allen Nickell, 28, and Kevin Rex Smith, 30, were killed in the line of duty at approximately 5 PM near the community of Cranston in rural Rowan County during wildland firefighting operations along Island Fork Road. Both were members of the Route 377 Volunteer Fire Department. Kenneth Allen Nickell, a 6-year veteran, and Kevin Rex Smith, a firefighter since 1998, both left behind wives and children. This virtual condolence book was created for anyone who wished to offer their comments of support and sympathy. After one week, this book was closed. Below are the 168 entries made by individuals and departments from across Kentucky and around the world. Our
thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. Our Fire family has just lost 2
brothers. May God bless the families of Kenny and Kevin. We the firefighters of the

these brothers of mine .some of my fellow employees had this privilage at competions. they

in him should not perish but, have everlasting life. Words cannot describe the pain and suffering one must endure after the loss of a loved
one, much less the loss of a fellow fireifhgter. I am deeply sorry about what has happened

families. Words are so hard to come by at a time such as this. I, too, have a husband who is a
volunteer firefighter. I cannot imagine the sorrow of those left behind to carry on. My
heart goes out to Mrs. Nickell and Mrs. Smith. May God be with you as you and your

somehow bring comfort to your lives. Although we did not personally know these two men, they were our brothers, and the
