Kenneth Allen Nickell, 28
Kevin Rex Smith, 30
Route 377 Volunteer Fire Department

On April 6, 1999 firefighters Kenneth Allen Nickell, 28, and Kevin Rex Smith, 30, were killed in the line of duty at approximately 5 PM near the community of Cranston in rural Rowan County during wildland firefighting operations along Island Fork Road. Both were members of the Route 377 Volunteer Fire Department.

Kenneth Allen Nickell, a 6-year veteran, and Kevin Rex Smith, a firefighter since 1998, both left behind wives and children.

Below are the 168 entries made by individuals and departments from across Kentucky and around the world.

A Prayer
.Brother when you weep for me
Remember that it was meant to be
Lay me down and when you leave
Remember I'll be at your sleeve
In every dark and choking hall
I'll be there as you slowly crawl
on every roof in driving snow
I'll hold your coat and you will know
In cellars hot with searing heat
At windows where a gate you meet
In closets where young children hide
You know I'll be there at your side
The house from which I now respond
Is overstaffed with heroes gone
Men who answered one last bell
Did the job and did it well
As firemen we understand
That death's a card dealt in our hand
A card we hope we never play
But one we hold there anyway
That card is something we ignore
As we crawl across a weakened floor
For we know that we're the only prayer
For anyone that might be there
So remember as you wipe your tears
The joy I knew throughout the years
As I did the job I loved to do
I pray that thought will see you through

St. Mathew 15:24-28
Then said Jesus unto his diciples, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."
"For whosoever will save his life shall lose it! and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it."
"For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?"
"For the son of a man shall come in the glory of his father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works."
Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the son of man coming to his kingdom."
Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of Kenny and Kevin.
