Record temperatures reinforce the need to focus on summer safety

PHI Air Medical Press Release

LEXINGTONPHI Air Medical, Inc., the nation’s premier provider of air medical services, is urging the community through outreach efforts to be prepared and to practice safe behavior during the summer months.

“As an Emergency Medical Service, we see a dramatic increase in preventable injuries where we are called to respond during the summer months,” said Jonathan Collier of PHI Air Medical. “As we go out into the community this summer, we want to do everything we can to bring attention to basic safety facts that will hopefully prevent an accident from occurring. If our efforts result in preventing even one accident, then we will see this effort as a success.”

As part of their message of safety, PHI is asking that people be aware of the little things that when overlooked, could result in dire consequences. Some of the facts concerning summer safety can be startling:

  • Nearly 400,000 children younger than 19 years-old are treated in emergency rooms across the country every year for bicycle-related injuries. While the arms and legs are injured the most, head injuries are the most serious. Bicycle helmets reduce the risk of injury by an astounding 85 percent and the risk of brain injury by as much as 88 percent.

  • Pool drowning can also occur in just inches of water, experts say that parents should always practice touch supervision - be close enough to reach out to the child at any time, be certified in CPR and make sure the child is wearing an approved flotation device such as a life vest.

  • Dehydration is a frequent cause of emergency room visits during the hot summer months. The best way to prevent this is by drinking eight, 8-ounce glasses of water a day (about 1.9 liters). The rule could also be stated, "Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day," as all fluids count toward the daily total.

  • There are an estimated 1.25 million injuries per year related to burn incidents. It is crucial to always remain aware of your surroundings when operating an open flame when grilling or maintaining a controlled bon fire. Protective clothing and gear should be used at all times in these cases.

 Community Involvement

For several years, PHI Air Medical has been active throughout Kentucky by providing critical air ambulance services and vital support to EMS, law enforcement and local hospitals without being a burden to taxpayers.

“We are committed to our community beyond providing air medical services,” said Collier. “We feel it is our duty to make a difference and help proactively impact the health of those citizens we are here to serve. PHI is recognized as not only a leader in the community, but around the state and across the country for our commitment to safety, clinical care and the level of professionalism our people exhibit. We are very proud to play a part in the success of our community.”
