"We're trying to figure out what the next step should be," said Mona Cadena, a staff member with Amnesty International in Washington. Chad Boggess, 27, of Cross Lanes, W.Va., died April 11, 2002, after a beating at the local jail. A deputy jailer, Robert Price, is serving a five-year sentence in federal prison. Price pleaded guilty in January 2003 to a federal civil rights violation for beating Boggess with a riot baton and using pepper spray on him. Two other deputy jailers, who had been charged with first-degree assault, were acquitted Monday. A paramedic who was charged with murder also was acquitted Monday.
