'Poison Safe Packs' training offered Mar. 16 By
KEVIN SLOAS DRY RIDGE — The Kentucky Regional Poison Center of Kosair Children’s Hospital along with the City of Dry Ridge Division of Emergency Services, DANA Corporation and American Emergency Resources, Inc. is offering a free “Poison Safe Packs” educational program for Kentucky Emergency Service Agencies to use in their community education programs, and as part of the EMS Educator Resources Network. The Kentucky Regional Poison Center is using the Poison Safe Packs to spread the poison prevention message to areas of Kentucky that are underserved by the Poison Center. The EMS Educator Resource Network has been designed to keep up with the demands of the 3.8 million people who are provided services by the Kentucky Regional Poison Center. Schools, organizations, or clinics will often sponsor health and wellness fairs and request participation of the center and its services. Teaching adults and children the dangers of poison, as well as showing them the resources that are available from the Kentucky Regional Poison Center are essential elements of poison prevention. Each Poison Safe Pack is a colorful plastic tote that includes everything you need to present a poison prevention program. Included in the instructors’ kit are telephone stickers, lesson plans, a video and age appropriate handouts. These packs are well organized and very portable. In 2000, the Kentucky Regional Poison Center received over 64,000 emergency and information calls. Over 74% of these were directly related to a poison emergency. Most poison exposures can be managed at home, however many families do not call the poison center when a child or other family member is poisoned. This program has the potential to reach children and adults in underserved regions of the state and provide an important safety program to them. We would like to invite all emergency service personnel to attend this program on March 16, 2002 and become a member of the Kentucky Regional Poison Center’s EMS Educator Resource Network. The Poison Safe Pack Program will be from 10 AM till 12 noon and an afternoon EMS continuing education program from 1 PM till 4 PM. The program is being held in the Educational Training Facility at DANA Corporation. Afternoon refreshments are being provided by American Emergency Resources, Inc. Any one wishing to attend may pre-register by contacting Kevin Sloas, Firefighter Paramedic at 1-859-824-9158 or EKEMS@YAHOO.COM. Continuing education credit will be provided.
