Clarification: KBEMS is not waiving EMT-Instructor requirement By
JOHN HULTGREN FRANKFORT — According to Lee Brown, chairman of the Kentucky Board of EMS Education Committee, KBEMS is not waiving EMT-Instructor requirements. The Kentucky EMS Connection reported last week that a precedent may have been set when the board approved waiving the EMT-Instructor requirements for an individual who apparently has only assisted with one EMT course but who has been a fire service instructor for 17 years. Actually, according to Brown, the individual involved was already an EMT Instructor and the board was only waiving the requirements for the individual to serve as a lead instructor. In researching this topic, the Kentucky EMS Connection was unable to find a two course requirement for lead instructors. According to 202 KAR 7.094, a lead instructor for an EMT-Basic course only needs to be a Kentucky certified EMT-Basic instructor. However, another regulation has a two course requirement for EMT-Basic instructor candidate supervising instructors. 202 KAR 7:070 states that an EMT-Basic instructor candidate must complete a student teaching and evaluation internship under the direct supervision of a lead instructor who has been a Kentucky certified EMT Instructor for at least three years and who has taught at least two complete EMT-Basic training courses prior to serving as an EMT-Basic instructor candidate supervising instructor.
