Poison Center offers EMS education 'Poison Safe Packs'

LOUISVILLE — The Kentucky Regional Poison Center of Kosiar Children's Hospital is offering free "Poison Safe Packs" for Kentucky EMS agencies to use in their community education programs.

By partnering with EMS services in Kentucky, the center hopes to reach the rural counties in Kentucky that are underserved by the Poison Center.

Each Poison Safe Pack is a large colorful plastic tote that includes items that can be used to present a poison prevention program. The kit includes an instructor's guide, lesson plans, a video, examples, and handouts. The kit is designed so the presenter can review the materials, set out the props, and present a brief talk or lesson on poison prevention.

Last year the Kentucky Regional Poison Center received over 64,000 emergency and information phone calls, of which 74% were directly related to a poison exposure.

The center encourages Kentucky EMS agencies to become a member of the Kentucky Regional Poison Center's EMS Educator Resource Network. To schedule a "train-the-trainer" workshop contact Ashley Lenox at 502-629-5428 or 1-800-222-1222, or by e-mail at ashley.lenox@nortonhealthcare.org.
