LOUISVILLE — Tim Whalin, the publisher of the Kentucky Fire Wire and a Harrods Creek firefighter, passed away Wednesday after an illness.

"Tim lost his fight and left us peacefully and we know that he will no longer suffer the effects of his lung transplant and cystic fibrosis, " wrote his sisters, Sara and Becca Whalin last night.

According to the Harrods Creek Fire Department Internet site, Tim had been a valuable and active member of the Harrods Creek Fire Department since 1995 and his accomplishments include becoming an EMT, apparatus operator, director of the Harrods Creek Explorer program, and webmaster of Harrods Creek's web site.

Due to illness Tim required a double lung transplant after which he fought back to return to active service as as apparatus operator. Tim received the 1998 Chief's Award, 1998 Harrods Creek Firefighter of the Year and in 1999 was awarded the Scott Hamilton Memorial Award for Leadership.

Tim touched many people's lives both within and outside of the emergency services family. Tim was a true friend to many people and will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, in Louisville. Visitation will also be held on Friday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and again from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The funeral will be Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.
