By MIKE POYNTER
University of Kentucky Air Medical Service

LEXINGTON — The University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center knows no boundaries when it comes to health care. That is why six UK health care professionals are crossing international borders all in the name of better health care.

On July 5 through July 16, UK Air Medical Service flight paramedics Mike Poynter, John Isfort, and Eddie Crews, along with flight nurses Elizabeth Clark and Sandy Wells, will be traveling to Helsinki, Finland to teach 30 Finnish physicians, nurses and paramedics about emergency medicine.

Also accompanying the group are Steve English, a flight nurse from STATCARE in Louisville, and Julia Martin, M.D. Martin sits on the Kentucky Board of EMS.

These personnel from the UK Emergency Transport Service teach classes regionally for Kentucky health care workers.

"Maintaining positive international relationships is very important to us," Poynter said. Poynter is coordinating the class. "We can learn a lot from each other."

The group of Finnish professionals that will participate in this program consist of nurses, paramedics, and physicians.

This event will mark the first time the UK Medical Center has ever traveled as a unified teaching group out of country. Two years ago, Finland sent 16 key medical personnel to Lexington to be trained.
