GWEN BOLIN PROVIDENCE The second reading of an ordinance establishing an emergency ambulance service district was unanimously approved by the Webster County Fiscal Court in Monday morning’s meeting. Of major concern to most residents within the district was the issue of taxes to fund the district. Upon hearing protests from several residents after the ordinance’s first reading earlier in the month, the court chose to hold the tax rate to six cents per $100 of full assessed value. According to estimates by Judge-Executive Jim Townsend, that amount should bring in nearly $200,000 to fund the county’s ambulance service. All residents of Webster County will be included in the ambulance district with the exception of those residing within the city limits of Providence. A three-member board of directors will be established to oversee the ambulance district with members being appointed by the Fiscal Court. This additional tax will be seen by county residents on their upcoming tax bill. According to County Treasurer Paula Guinn, tax statements should be received around the end of October or the first of November.
