HCFA publishes proposed ambulance fee schedule

LOUISVILLE — HCFA has published the proposed fee schedule for ambulance reimbursement. HCFA is required by the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 to begin reimburse ambulance services provided to Medicare beneficiaries by using a national fee schedule. 

Congress has stipulated that HCFA must use Negotiated Rulemaking to determine the structure of that fee schedule. A committee of 11 members representing HCFA and the national organizations that represent ambulance providers have been meeting since 1999.

HCFA published the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking today and it will be open for comments until November 13. HCFA plans to implement the new fee schedule on January 1, 2001.

Proposed Fee Schedule Amounts 

  • Ground Ambulances: 
    • Basic Life Support: $157.52 
    • Basic Life Support Emergency: $252.03 
    • Advanced Life Support: $189.02 
    • Advanced Life Support Emergency: $299.29 
    • Advanced Life Support 2: $433.18 
    • Specialty Care Transport: $511.94 
    • Paramedic Intercept: $275.65 
    • Mileage: $5.00 
    • Mileage (1st 17 miles from rural pickup): $7.50
