EMMITSBURG, Maryland — The United States Fire Administration (USFA), part of  the Federal Emergency Management Agency, today announced the availability of two new publications for fire and emergency medical service (EMS) departments.

The Personnel Accountability Systems Technology Assessment Manual provides information on technology to monitor and locate firefighters and other first responders at fires and other emergencies. The manual also has examples of effective personnel accountability systems currently used by fire departments of various sizes, types, and locations.

The other new publication is the Hazardous Material Response Technology Assessment Manual. It details technologies that can assist local emergency response to hazardous materials incidents. Included is information on hazardous material detection, decontamination, fire suppression foams, containment devices, and personal protective clothing.

"These new manuals are part of our ongoing effort to help the nation's fire service community to reduce life and economic losses due to fire and related emergencies," said USFA Administrator Carrye Brown.

The new manuals are available as downloadable files or printed format. To download, visit the USFA on the World Wide Web at www.usfa.fema.gov and click on Publications. To receive printed copies, call the USFA Automated Publications Ordering Line at (301) 447-1189 or mail your request to:
