EMT-Basic
of the
Year
Scott
Shaw
Campbellsville
Taylor County Rescue
Campbellsville

|
- Battalion Chief
- 25 years of
service
- Very committed to
emergency services
- Extraordinary
rescue of a little girl: Swift water accident in
Loretto (Marion County) where mother and
daughter were swept away while in a mobile home
and eventually pulled apart. The last words from
the little girl were "Mom, I love you. I'm
going to die." The daughter was swept three
miles downstream. When Shaw finally made it to
her, she was stripped of her clothes by the
raging waters, hypothermic, and with an open
fracture of her lower leg, multiple bruises,
cuts and abrasions. Shaw placed his
flotation device on the victim for protection
while he remained in a dry suit, which also
offered him some flotation protection. The
extraction from the area was expected to last an
hour. They found foam rubber debris which they
cut and placed on the victim for warmth, then
found the driest half they could find and
covered her, with the exception of her head, to
provide some warmth. The decisions and actions
of Scott Shaw made a lie saving difference for
the victim. His actions not only achieved the
goals of this incident, but his commitment to
emergency services and having the foresight for
this team which responded also made the
difference.
